WHAT a good time the Buffer had celebrating the demise of President Bush. And right on George W's own doorstep, too. Normally, we would wait for the American TV networks to call the presidential election. But this time it was Brian, the barman in the Old Ebbitt Grill, the nearest boozer to the White House, who made the announcement. At 6.30pm local time, Brian told us that Bush was back down the road to Texas, the epidemic of mad cowboy disease was over. Brian is from Kilwinning, Ayrshire, but now dispenses drinks to Washington's elite.
The news about Bush had been imparted to Brian by two distraught White House staffers who had come to the Old Ebbitt for a stiffener or two after reading predictions of a Kerry landslide in the exit polls. Even though the cost of a stiffener is pretty stiff in the Old Ebbitt at $9 ((pounds) 5.50) a drink, we had Brian pour us a few celebratory tinctures.See the full content of this document

The celebrations moved on to a nearby plush office, where a bevy of lobbyists, politicians, movers and shakers and a Buffer had gathered to consume fine wines and canapes and watch the TV election coverage. It was a posh do, but the Buffer felt he was momentarily back in Glasgow when a Washington lady asked: "Who ate all the pumpkin pie?"
